ABOUT US

The Embedded Systems Lab, located at FH OÖ Campus Hagenberg, is dedicated to practical research in intelligent hardware/software systems. Serving as a bridge between academic research and practical product development, we leverage the latest scientific findings, technologies, and concepts for applied research. This allows our industry partners to gain technological advantages with minimal risk.

Our research is supported by European and Austrian funding agencies and involves collaboration with innovative companies. Our technological focus encompasses Embedded Systems, Internet of Things, Wearable Computing, Smart Textiles, Real-time Applications, Cyber Physical Systems, and Electronic Design Automation within the Information and Communication Systems research area of the Universities Research & Development department.

UNIVERSITY

FH OÖ Logo

More than 380 researchers, about 600 national and international partners in economy, science and society and more than 300 R&D projects every year have made the University of Applied Sciences of Upper Austria number 1 among the Universities of Applied Sciences in Austria!

The university covers the most current and most significant research fields of the 21st century at the four locations Hagenberg, Linz, Wels and Steyr. The special feature: Close networking with companies and institutions in practice. The Research Groups conduct research and development in exact co-ordination with the needs of the economy, a fact which guarantees rapid realization in industry as well as society. The research areas at Hagenberg are Information and Communication Systems, Quality of Life for the Elderly, Media and Knowledge Technologies and Software Technology and Applications.

The research Group Embedded Systems is close connected to the bachelor degree program “Hardware-Software Design” and the master degree program “Embedded Systems Design”:

The bachelor degree program “Hardware-Software Design” integrates computer science, software development, and hardware design. It combines competencies in software, electronics (hardware), and digital communication, encompassing hardware development, software development, and digital communication.

The full-time Master’s degree program “Embedded Systems Design” covers hardware, software, sensors, and systems networking. Students can specialize in System-on-Chip Design, Embedded Computing, or Systems & Signals. The program also emphasizes teamwork, leadership, and project management skills.

COOPERATIONS

The Embedded Systems Lab offers various opportunities for cooperation. We can help you to verify the practicability of your innovative ideas within feasibility studies or proof of concept implementations. We support you during the conceptual and design phase, the development of prototypes, and the analysis and test phase. Innovative small and medium-sized enterprises play a key role in our efforts for transferring knowledge and research results.

You can benefit from our expertise in the research areas of Embedded Systems, Internet of Things and Electronic Design Automation. We will evaluate your ideas, provide customer-specific research solutions, and support you during the conceptual design phase. We can support you during the preparation of a research project at national and international level. Furthermore, we offer knowledge transfer within workshops and training for companies, which would like to get in contact with new technologies and innovations.

Key facts:

  • Total costs: EUR 1,000 – 12,000
  • Full time equivalents: 1
  • Project duration: 1 weeks – 2 month
  • Target groups: Start-ups, SME, LE

We have completed many contracted research projects with and without public funding. The major target group for these projects are start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises, which could benefit of various public grants. Fundable plans are e.g. concept developments, preparation work for a research project, feasibility studies, development of prototypes, or analysis of technology transfer potential.

Key facts:

  • Total costs: EUR 5,000 – 200,000
  • Full time equivalents: 1 – 3
  • Project duration: 2 weeks – 2 years
  • Target groups:
    Start-ups, SME, LE

We have successfully completed a series of research projects with one to several cooperation partners as coordinator and as participant. Research projects with participation of a university partner will be funded by e.g. the Government of Upper Austria, the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) or the European Union. The funding rate of research projects depends on the size of the participating companies, the research topic and the technology readiness level (TRL).

Key facts:

  • Total costs: EUR 100,000 – 5,000,000
  • Funding rate: 50 – 80%
  • Full time equivalents: 2 – 6
  • Project duration: 1 – 5 years
  • Target groups: SME, LE, Research Institutes
